What is a search engine?

A search engine is a system or software that generates hyperlinks to websites in response to a query inputed by a user.  A user looking for a particular web page types in a word or phrase into the search bar of the engine. The search engine then lists out relevant web pages related to the users intent.  A search engine is basically an index of websites or webpages. It is a database of information that has been collected and stored, and can be searched.  Several search engines exist today , but Google is the dominant one.  A Brief History of Search Engines At first, Search engines had a process of manual indexing of web pages by hand.
