The Digital Divide: Why It Persists in the Modern World


In an age where our lives are becoming more digital, over a third of the global population still lacks access to the internet. This digital divide is not just about having access to the internet—it is about who has the ability to participate in the digital economy, access information, and use technology to improve their lives. Despite advancements in technology and decreasing costs of internet data and devices, this gap stubbornly persists. Let’s explore why this is happening and what we can do about it.

 What Is the Digital Divide?  

Before diving into the reasons behind the persistence of the digital divide, it’s important to understand what it means. The digital divide refers to the gap between those who have access to digital technology, such as the internet and smartphones, and those who do not. This divide impacts education, job opportunities, healthcare access, and even social inclusion.  

The problem is not just limited to access—it extends to affordability, digital skills, and infrastructure. While technology continues to advance, millions remain excluded from its benefits.  


 Why Does the Digital Divide Persist?  

 1. Lack of Infrastructure in Rural Areas  

One of the primary reasons for the digital divide is the lack of infrastructure in rural and remote areas. While urban centers are adopting high-speed internet and 5G networks, many rural areas are still stuck with 2G connections or have no internet at all.  

Building infrastructure in remote areas is expensive, and with sparse populations, internet service providers (ISPs) often see little financial incentive to invest. The result? Limited or no options for people living in these areas.  

 Think of a family in a remote village with no reliable internet connection. The children cannot access online education, and adults miss out on remote job opportunities.  


 2. High Costs of Connectivity  

Even in areas where the internet is available, affordability remains a major barrier. For example, Africans pay more for internet data than people in any other region globally. Lower-income households are often forced to choose between basic necessities and internet access.  

Devices, too, can be prohibitively expensive. Smartphones, tablets, and laptops, while more affordable than before, remain out of reach for many.  

A worker earning minimum wage might need to save for months just to buy a smartphone, let alone pay for monthly internet data plans.  


 3. Digital Literacy Gap  

Access to the internet isn’t enough; people need the skills to use it effectively. Many individuals, especially in low-income or rural areas, lack basic digital literacy. Without these skills, they cannot participate fully in the digital world, even if they have access to the tools.  

Governments and organizations have initiated programs to improve digital skills, but progress has been slow.

 4. Income Inequality and Social Background  

Income plays a huge role in the digital divide. Wealthier individuals can afford better devices, faster internet, and even digital skill training. Meanwhile, children from low-income families often view technology as a luxury rather than a necessity.  

For example, many families in developing countries must prioritize basic needs like food and shelter over technology. This perpetuates a cycle of digital exclusion.  


5. The Role of Power and Electricity  

Electricity is a fundamental requirement for digital access, yet it remains unreliable in many regions. In countries like Nigeria, power outages are frequent, with the national grid collapsing multiple times in a year. In some northern states, electricity can be absent for weeks.  

In rural African communities, having electricity is often considered a miracle. People celebrate when the lights come on, even if it’s only for a few hours. Meanwhile, others in developed regions enjoy uninterrupted power, making it easier to stay connected.  

 Imagine trying to use a laptop or charge your phone when electricity is available only sporadically. Without power, even the most advanced devices are rendered useless.  


 6. The Global Urban-Rural Divide  

Urban areas often enjoy better connectivity compared to rural ones. The share of internet users in cities is double that in rural areas. Urban residents benefit from high-speed internet, multiple ISPs, and reliable power. In contrast, rural areas are left behind.  

Bridging this urban-rural gap requires targeted investments in infrastructure and policies that prioritize underserved regions.   


 Collaborative Solutions Are Key  

The digital divide isn’t a problem one group can solve alone. Governments, tech companies, internet service providers, and communities must work together to bridge the gap. Here’s what I think could be done:  

  1. Governments should invest in infrastructure, especially in rural areas, and subsidize internet costs for low-income families.  
  2. Tech companies can create affordable devices and partner with educational institutions to promote digital literacy.  
  3. ISPs should expand their networks to underserved areas and offer affordable data plans.  
  4. Communities can organize digital literacy workshops and advocate for better local infrastructure.  


 Why Closing the Gap Matters  

Bridging the digital divide is not just about providing internet access—it’s about creating opportunities. From online education to remote work, the internet has the power to change lives. When everyone has equal access, society as a whole benefits.  

For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, students in digitally connected households could continue their education online, while those without access were left behind. The divide became even more apparent then, highlighting the urgent need for action.

The digital divide persists because of systemic issues like infrastructure gaps, high costs, income inequality, and digital illiteracy. While progress has been made, there is still a long way to go. By working together—governments, businesses, and communities—we can ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has a chance to thrive in our increasingly digital world.  


The digital divide affects us all, directly or indirectly. It limits innovation, reduces economic growth, and perpetuates inequality.
